A great book to show a lot of character development would be Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth.
It tells the story of Emil Sinclair who goes from a sorta sheltered innocent boyhood to a manhood of knowing and his struggle of being between two worlds of light and dark.
The author, Hermann Hesse, writes this book with this amazing poetic sound and such a different look on life. It's the book that got me back into reading.
(It does have some atheists views and points so if you don't like that it's just a warning.)
